Manager / Assistant Manager, Laboratory and Research Safety
The Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Office supports the HKSTP's mission to accelerate technological innovation and commercialization by promoting a safe and healthy environment and ensuring compliance with laws, regulation, and corporate policies. We work closely with our technology clusters and platforms, project development and facility management teams as well as the community around us to strive for excellence.
The Position
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Laboratory and Research Safety, the Manager will support the laboratory and research safety programs to ensure a high standard of compliance across tenant laboratories and central research facilities. The ideal candidate will leverage their own research background to provide practical, science-based safety solutions that support innovation while mitigating risk.
- Advise premises owners/managers in performing risk assessments and make recommendations on appropriate laboratory safety practices
- Perform safety inspections, compliance audits, safety data analysis and hazard assessments of laboratories and central research support facilities, prepare timely reports and monitor remedial actions when necessary
- Design, perform or coordinate environmental or occupational hygiene monitoring; oversee the maintenance and calibration of industrial hygiene instrumentation
- Manage laboratory safety-related documentations, such as licensing/permits/registers for hazardous materials, registration of laboratory users, ensuring the compliance with the local regulations
- Manage and optimize safety database to streamline reporting and tracking of hazardous materials and safety findings
- Prepare and organize various safety trainings for laboratory users
- Assist in emergency response to laboratory-related accidents or incidents, carry out investigations and monitor the implementation of remedial actions
- Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
The Candidate
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering, preferably in Biological Sciences, Medical Technology, Chemical Engineering, Occupational Hygiene or closely related fields with research experience
- Post-graduate degree in Biotechnology or Engineering is highly desirable to ensure a deep understanding of the research environment
- Minimum 8 years’ relevant working experience in laboratory safety. Direct experience in a wet-lab or research setting is an advantage
- Experience in safety database management is a plus, ability to leverage IT tools for data analysis and reporting
- Candidate with less experience may be considered for the position of Assistant Manager, Laboratory and Research Safety
- Higher education or professional qualifications with less experience will also be considered
- Professional qualification(s) in occupational health & safety (e.g. RPH, CIH, CSP or RBP) are highly desirable
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, self-motivated, self-organized and be a good team player
- Proficiency in MS Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin)
